Eyelid surgery involves the alteration of the upper and/or lower eyelids. While this surgery is often performed for cosmetic reasons, some circumstances make the operation necessary for the improvement of a person’s vision.
When the upper eyelids have excessive, drooping skin, this can obstruct a person’s vision. Because a person with this condition is prevented from a normal range of sight, surgery is performed to improve vision.
Known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery is usually done on individuals whose upper eyelid skin has lost its elasticity and now rests on their lower lids, blocking their vision when they look in certain directions. Fatty deposits on the lower lid can result in wrinkles and sometimes the appearance of puffiness. These bags, as they are often called, are caused by a weakening of the thin membrane that holds fat to cushion the eyeball. As this membrane ages, it sometimes allows the fat to move forward into the lower lids, creating the bulges under the eyes that can also impede a person’s vision. While not occurring as often as eye bags, the cushioning fat in the upper lids can also cause bulges above the eye.
When our skilled surgeon performs eyelid surgery on the upper and/or lower eyelids, the impediments to sight are removed. A pleasing and more youthful appearance to the eye area is also produced. This operation is performed by our experienced plastic surgeon in a way that brings about natural-looking results.
